Farfalle from Nuhun Ankara - the bow tie shape, pinched in the middle with ridged, frilled edges. Plain durum wheat pasta, product of Turkey, in a 17.64 oz (500 g) bag.
Highlights
- Durum wheat semolina - the only ingredient on the pack
- Bow tie shape - a pinched centre with two flat wings
- 8 to 10 minutes - the cooking time printed on the pack
- About 8 servings - per 17.64 oz (500 g) bag, as the pack states
- No added salt - salt the water to your own taste
How to Cook
The pack asks for about 1 liter of water per 100 g of pasta. Bring it to a boil, salt it lightly, add the pasta and cook gently for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring now and then. Then pour in a glass of cold water and drain, as the pack directs.
Taste a piece at 8 minutes, including the pinched middle where the dough is folded double. Stir well in the first minute after the pasta goes in.
Good with a light tomato or butter sauce, tossed with vegetables, or cooled for a pasta salad.
What Is Farfalle?
Farfalle is Italian for butterflies, and the Turkish name kelebek makarna means exactly the same thing - butterfly pasta. In English it is usually called bow tie pasta. Each piece is a small rectangle of dough pinched in the centre, so the middle is folded double and the wings are a single layer.
