Star fruit, also called carambola - a five-ribbed tropical fruit that turns into a row of stars when you slice it across. Grown in the USA and sold by the piece.
Highlights
- Five-point star shape - every crosswise slice is a star, which is why it ends up on fruit platters and cakes
- Edible skin - no peeling; rinse and slice
- Sweet and tart - the riper and more yellow it gets, the sweeter it tastes
- Product of USA - as printed on the fruit sticker
- Sold each - one fruit per unit
How to Enjoy
Rinse, trim the thin brown edge off each rib if you like, cut off the two ends and slice across into stars. Remove any seeds. Eat it as it is, add it to fruit salad, or use the slices to decorate cakes, drinks and dessert plates. Green fruit is firmer and more tart; leave it at room temperature for a few days and it turns yellow and sweeter. Once ripe, keep it in the fridge and eat within a few days. People with kidney problems are generally advised not to eat star fruit - ask your doctor if that applies to you.
What Is Star Fruit?
Star fruit is the fruit of the carambola tree, grown in warm climates. It is crisp and juicy, with a taste somewhere between a green apple, a grape and citrus. In Turkish it is called yildiz meyvesi. Most people use it fresh: sliced into stars for a fruit plate or as a garnish.
